National Walk Your Dog Week

www.walkyourdogweek.com

It's National Walk Your Dog Week in the United States, and according to www.walkyourdogweek.com, "National Walk Your Dog Week was founded in 2010 by Celebrity Pet Lifestyle Expert and Animal Rescuer Colleen Paige, to bring awareness to the ever increasing problem of canine behavior issues and canine obesity in America."  Raising awareness is what we're all about here at Pictures of Dog Doo-Doo, so we're happy to join the discussion!  Canine obesity?  Not my problem.  Canine behavior issues?  Also, not as much my problem.  Owner behavior issues?  That's my speciality.

So naturally, our focus is on cleaning up after your dog when on a walk.  To that end I've boiled down all the tips and advice into these three simple points:

A German Hundetoilette
1. Bring bags

Most responsible dog owners use some kind of bag to pick up after their dog.  The jury is still out as to what type of bag has the least environmental impact, but the bag needs to be sturdy enough to prevent any accidents.

This German dog-toilet has a diagram of the proper method for cleaning up after your dog with a plastic bag.  Some communities have these installed in parks and dog walk areas for your convenience.  This one even supplies bags for you!

2. Bring extra bags

Maybe your dog goes once on your walk.  Maybe your dog goes twice.  Maybe you pick up someone else's turd you find along your walk.  Maybe you find a winning lottery ticket on the ground right next to that poop.  It never hurts to be prepared!

3. Dispose of the poop properly

I see so many pictures of bagged turds hanging from fences, trees, or otherwise tossed aside, when the last step is the easiest one!  Throw that poop in the trash!  Some communities have special receptacles just for dog poop, and some even harvest methane and fertilizer from the decomposing material.  There are numerous campaigns that try to reinforce the idea of putting the bag in a bin or trash can, even if you have to transport it some distance.  Check out these vehicles doing just that, just hope they don't accidentally turn on that back wiper:

Even police dogs have to go sometimes
They must have a few dogs

  2. This is a great post - thank you for joining the hop! I completely agree about bringing multiple bags - I always carry a roll in my treat pouch and two rolls in my car! I love the photos of the cars with the poop bags on their back windshield wipers. I've at times literally driven with my window rolled down and my arm out the window holding a poop bag because there wasn't a trash can where we walked! Now I know what to do in the future and, yes, will be careful not to turn on the wipers! Yuck!

    1. I'm so happy to participate in the hop, thanks for having me! I often wonder if it's getting into a car that makes people toss their poop bags or availability of trash cans. That would be a funny picture though, someone driving down the street holding a bag of poop out the window. I'll keep an eye out for that

  3. Great message - one we've really been trying to promote here in the states...I'm going to start working on horse poop too because there is a lot of that where we live. Those photos of the poop bags on the back of the car...hope those are strong bags!

  4. Great to have you joining in the hop today...Had to laugh at tip #3...The other day at an elementary school Gizmo pooped before we went in..I bagged it and left it by the car tire till we came out...As I was returning to the car later on I saw a woman stooping to pick up the bag (!) I called out to her not to touch the bag...she stopped and asked what was in it...when I said "dog poop" you should have seen her run :)

  5. OMG, I love the images of the poop hanging off the cars! That's some dedication right there! Great way to promote responsible disposal of our pets 'presents', too :)

  6. Loving the bags hanging off the back of the cars. Sometimes mine is swinging from the handlebars of the bike. Never thought of tying it off to my bike's tailgate :) In Australia most parks frequented by dogs have council doggy-do bags available - don't they do this in the US? Will have to post a pic up if this is the case. Thanks for joining the BlogHop.

  7. Keep on blogging, cause dogs keep on doing their business. Have they no shame?

  8. Just don't put the full poop bag in your front pocket and leave it there. And let it go through the wash. Not that I've ever done that or anything ...
