Dog Poop and Broken Glass

Here's a shot from right outside the building where we live.  My son, who is almost 3 years old, likes to cut through the bushes when we're going out walking, he calls this his "special way."  It's too small a path for an adult to cut through, and in another year or two he will be too big to fit.  Today we discovered that not only had someone let their dog poop there without cleaning it up, but someone smashed a beer bottle as well.

Dog poop and broken glass right outside my building

It's harder to see the broken glass, but the dog doo is pretty obvious.  Most adults wouldn't even look in this gap between the bushes, but since my small child likes to cut through this way we noticed it right away.  I caught him just before he stepped in the turd, and I had to go out and clean it up myself to keep it from happening in the future.

The beer bottle is in such a strange place I have to assume it came from someone out drinking in public (illegal in the U.S.) or was thrown from a passing car (also illegal).  Clearly whoever did this has bigger problems than dog poop and is probably not in complete control of their actions.  I hope they can find the help they need.

I also hope whoever allowed their dog to do this comes to their senses and starts picking up after their dog.  Sometimes accidents happen; a surprise second poop on a walk may mean you're out of poop bags.  But I noticed this turd yesterday, and at least 24 hours later it was still sitting there so it's not like the culprit was in any hurry to come back and take care of their business.  Or their dog's business.

SCTV Great White North: Dog Scoops / Curb Your Dog

Here's a classic from Bob and Doug McKenzie on SCTV.  They discuss how they handle it when their dog does its business, and the responsibilities of dog owners in big cities like New York.

Dog Turd Just Outside the Playground

Here's a picture of a dog turd right outside the fenced-in playground at our local park.  One of the reasons I prefer this park is because it's fenced in, so this is as close as the dog poop gets to where my kids play.  Rain could still conceivably spread the bacteria into the playground, and this is right next to where I park my bike sometimes, so it's still obnoxious to let your dog do this here and not clean up.

The dog turd as seen from my bike (and part of my shoe).

Is That A Balloon Tied To Your Dog?

I couldn't resist turning it into a meme, then I couldn't think of anything clever to say.  If you have any ideas leave a comment or contact us on facebook or twitter!

Signs in Montclair, New Jersey

Here are two pictures of the signs in Montclair, New Jersey, that have taunted me over the years I've seen them but never had a camera with me.  The scooper's arm is incorporated into the letter "d" and the dog is the bottom part of the "g" (I guess).  Does the dog have a balloon tied to it?  Your guess is as good as mine.

There were several of these signs on the sidewalk outside the Mount Hebron School

Rain-bloated Dog Turd Outside Babies 'R' Us

Here's a rain-bloated dog turd in the parking lot outside a Babies 'R' Us.  This is the island between parking spaces in a strip mall, and it's ridiculous to me that people let their dogs go in a place like that and don't clean up.  It's gross.  I see people letting their dogs poop in parking lots all the time, and they always clean up afterwards.  Obviously not always.

It's The Law… It's A Courtesy..

Here's a sign from Brookline, MA, that makes an excellent point.  Not only is it the law, but a courtesy to your fellow living beings.

Do Not Walk Dogs On This Property

A sign outside of a condo building in Brookline, MA.  There are several reasons the residents don't want dogs roaming the landscaped areas outside their home, and dog poop immediately comes to mind.  And owners who don't clean up.

Her handsome put on ur emergency oxygen mask

This is one of the funniest comments ever left on one of our facebook posts, and I've turned it into a meme.  The original comment is gone now, but with regard to this sign the poster suggested: "It should say pick up ur children shit mouth bitch ahead. Her handsome put on ur emergency oxygen mask"

Shell Out Big Bucks for Licensed Costume

Here's another awareness-raising meme I made for Halloween 2014.  It strikes me that the holiday has turned into a spectacle where parents pay a fortune for the most elaborate costumes (sometimes for themselves)  for what?  Some candy?  Just don't let it ruin your Halloween.

Pretty Halloween Lights

This is a meme I created to help build awareness this Halloween.  Kids are out trick-or-treating in the dark and might step in your dog's droppings!

Dr. Jean Gauvin on Dog Poo and Public Health

Here's Dr. Jean Gauvin weighing in on cleaning up after your dog.  He's tweeting in French because he's "Vétérinaire petits animaux / Small animal veterinarian Président Association canadienne des médecins vétérinaires / President Canadian vet. medical association."  For some reason the only word abbreviated is in English, and it's for the word "veterinary."  Whether he can spell veterinary or not, he knows what he's talking about.

The Dog Poo Capitol of Britain

A mother in the town of Haverhill is calling her town the dog poo capitol of Britain.  Mel Turnbull says "[Haverhill] is the dog poo capital of Britain and now with the wet weather one pile spreads and then you've got three more. I am prepared to spray paint it all pink." She's got some great quotes, it's worth checking out the link.  She talks about how her son could have gone blind, and how the wet poop spattered all over her and her childrens' clothing.

Mel Turnbull with her children Evie and Callum

Turnbull believes it has become a copycat crime, and dog owners don't clean up after their pets because they see others don't. What do you think?

Dog fouling is a massive problem in Haverhill

@briancribb's tweet

Here's a tweet from Portland, Maine, with a bagged dog turd on the sidewalk.  Again it's this phenomenon of people taking the trouble to pick up after their dog, then not throwing away the bag of poop.

Finleywise's tweet

Here's a comment from @finleywise for people who put signs in their yards to discourage dog owners from letting their dogs poop there.  I'm not sure I agree with the statement:

You'll have to follow the link to see the sign on instragram.  For the record, I think funny signs are much better than having dog poop in my yard.

@LeeToma's tweets

Here's a tweet I just found from, of all places, the town where I live!  This was posted in April and here I am in September, so the trail is a little cold, but the tweet includes @BostonParksDept.  Maybe the Parks Department was looking for suggestions from surrounding towns?  Maybe @LeeToma just thought the Parks Dept would be interested.  I will investigate.
There's also this follow-up tweet/photo, supposedly with detail of the sign.  I don't know how much more detail there is, but the signs are slightly larger:

South Warrington Dog Poop Bins are Overflowing!

Here's an example of how dog poo issues are handled in south Warrington, UK, where thanks to pictures posted by readers to the online newspaper Warrington Worldwide, some public officials are probably going to get yelled at in the morning by their bosses.  The pictures of overflowing bins posted to the site was something of a public outcry, one that was addressed quickly by a local politician.  Councillor Mike Biggin challenged the council to do something about the bins, saying "It clearly represents a serious risk to Public Health to allow these bins to be overflowing with bags of dog faeces and other rubbish."

The council's response was something akin to the off-the-cuff excuses I might come up with 10 years ago for why my apartment is so messy when I've overslept and my parents are knocking on the door for a planned visit.  From the Warrington Worldwide article, a council spokesperson said "Due to increased activity in some of our parks over the bank holiday and due to a recent staff illness some bins in parks and open spaces across the borough have unfortunately not been emptied at their normal frequencies. We will be looking to clear the backlog as soon as practicable in those areas during this coming week." It would be like 10 years ago telling my parents "I've been busier than usual, there was a holiday, and I was sick too."

Who knows what will actually happen.  I'm sure they will clean up all the parks in the following week, but really it probably boils down to the employees who empty the park bins getting yelled at by their bosses when the word trickles down.

Here's an image of an overflowing bin, from the @warringtonworld tweet:

GoGoStik

Here's a product that came to my attention via twitter, and it makes two important promises.  First is that you can recycle your bread bags to pick up after your dog, and do so without bending over.

This caused me to look for GoGoStik on youtube, and the videos abound.  I picked the creepiest one to embed here, but to tell you the truth I only watched one or two.  Once you understand how it works you don't need to see it 100 times.

Before I tell you why I like this product, let me remind you that I don't receive any sort of kickback or promotional compensation for talking about these products.  I'm not sure what kind of an advertising budget the company that makes the GoGoStik has, but I'm willing to bet it's about the same as ours here at PoDDD.

The GoGoStik is good because it uses bags you already have.  Some products have special bags, only available from the manufacturer.  If GoGoStik inc goes out of business, you can still use the product.

The second reason I like it is because you don't have to bend over at all when using it.  Here's another poop video showing how to do it:

Rue Rude on Dog Poop in Paris

I found a site today with a hilarious picture, originally taken by someone called Ggugg on flickr, with a dog poop sign that's been "altered" by someone sick of all the dog poop.  Either that or they have something clinically wrong with them.  Maybe both.

I found the image at Rue Rude, a blog written by an American living in Paris, along with a scathing first-hand analysis of dog poop in the city.  20 years of experience living there gives the author a credible perspective on the problem.  According to Rue Rude, hundreds of people go to the hospital every year because of dog poop. The blog is very well written and worth checking out if you are interested in Paris or not.  Did you know in Paris they used to have a squad of dog poop collectors on mopeds?

Schmazzurro! HUNDESCHEISSE McDonald's Billboard

I don't remember where I got this image, but it's a McDonald's billboard that someone wrote "HUNDESCHEISSE" on.  Specifically on the hamburger part of the picture.  Google translate didn't know what "Schmazzurro" means, so if anyone does please let us know.  If you need google translate to know what "HUNDESCHEISSE" means, you're not good at reading contextual clues.  Here's a hint: this website is all about pictures of dog doo-doo.

Part of a new McDonald's ad campaign, or hilarious graffiti?  Most likely the latter.

Michele Mician's dog poo fairy tweet

It would seem that the Chicago Park District has adopted the "poop fairy" concept in their new anti-dog poop signs.  This picture was presumably taken by someone named Michele Mician and posted to twitter.
If you follow PoDDD then you're already familiar with the dog poo fairy campaign in the UK, and I wonder if this Chicago Poop Fairy was inspired by it.  Judge for yourself:

edfomeara's post on Vine

This man has always had a deep love for the countryside, but always remember to watch where you're going!  Some people think that dog poop is natural and doesn't need to be picked up when hiking or walking in the forest, but it can still carry dangerous bacteria and it is still important to clean up after your dog.  Just ask edfomeara:

Spelthorne Council's Controversial Campaign

Here are two signs that have caused a bit of a stir in the Borough of Spelthorne, UK.  Be warned, the first image is rather graphic, although I'm sure the child is probably eating some kind of chocolate mousse or bread pudding or something.  These images were first used in 2013, but according to Metro they went viral after being posted to imgur.  The second image is not as graphic.

I like how in the UK many of the councils have anonymous hotlines to call and report the dog mess, and I've often thought about setting up the same here in the US.  My dream would be to create an app that would allow people to post and receive alerts when they discover dog poop, so anyone with a smartphone (and GPS) would know when they are getting close to a turd.  We all have dreams.

San Marino mayor resigns over dog poop scandal

During my prolonged hiatus, I missed quite a few interesting stories related to dog doo.  This story comes from San Marino, CA, where the mayor was caught on tape throwing a bag of dog doo-doo on a neighbor's lawn.  Dennis Kneier is the man with the briefcase (and bag of poop) in the video.  Here's the news story from cbsLA:

According to this article from 89.3 KPCC, the residents of San Marino demanded the resignation of the mayor in the midst of what has become known as "poopgate."

Philip Lao, the man on whose lawn the former mayor threw the poop, opposed Kneier's attempts to paint bike lanes on the street and put new lights on the tennis court, according to this ABC news article.  Lao posted this sign in his front yard as a result of the unwanted dog poop.

The sign on Philip Lao's front yard, from ABC news
This reminds me of the Doo-doo Feud at the Jersey Shore that I posted about last summer.  If only I had gotten the perpetrator(s) on tape!

Im Durchgang darfst du nicht!

Well, it's been quite some time since I've posted or done anything here, but it's been a busy 6 months as we've had another child and I've finally finished school.  But do not despair!  I've been obsessively taking pictures of every dog turd and sign I walk by so that someday I could post them here.

This picture is of a sign in Switzerland at the start of a pedestrian walkway through a building.  It's not strictly about dogs pooping but rather dogs peeing, but I think it's implied that dogs shouldn't poop there as well.  In the walkway there are shops and entrances to the apartments above, and I'm sure the people using the Durchgang don't want to be stepping in dog pee (or poop).  The word dürfen (conjugated here as darfst) is usually a very polite way of asking something, so this is a very well-mannered sign.

Betty White's 92nd Birthday

In honor of Betty White's 92nd birthday today I found this clip from the Golden Girls where she uses a word that is supposedly Greek for the precise moment dog poop turns white.  I was able to find this entry in the Urban Dictionary for "garconanokin," which is exactly as Rose describes it.  The entry does not give a source, but you can buy "garconanokin" shirts and mugs according to a link on the site.  I loved The Golden Girls but was only able to watch it with my aunt; I was a little kid when it first aired and my parents thought it was too racy.  They were probably right, but it being restricted made me love the show all the more.  I'm sure I understood very little of it.
Happy birthday Ms. White!

Dallas Man Murders Neighbors Over Dog Poop

Here's another sad story about a 76-year-old Dallas man who took the law into his own hands and murdered his two upstairs neighbors.  Chung Kim was tired of his neighbors allowing their dog to urinate and defecate on their apartment's porch, causing it to drip below.  He shot and killed 31-year-old  Michelle Jackson as she was standing on her porch, then went upstairs and killed her boyfriend, Jaime Stafford.  The couple had 5 children.

The video below is from CBS 11 Dallas when the trial was just beginning.

These two videos are also from CBS 11 Dallas, but the story starts to get a little confused:

According to this Reuters article the man was convicted of capital murder, carrying an automatic sentence of life in prison without parole.

Dogs Poop in Alignment with Earth's Magnetic Field

Here's a story that has been making headlines around the country and world.  Scientists have discovered that like several species of mammal, dogs poop in alignment with the Earth's magnetic field. They studied 70 dogs and 1,893 poops (and 5,582 pees).

The article was published in the academic journal Frontiers in Zoology on December 27, 2013 and entitled "Dogs are sensitive to small variations of the Earth’s magnetic field."  There were many contributing authors: Vlastimil Hart, Petra Nováková, Erich Pascal Malkemper, Sabine Begall, Vladimír Hanzal, Miloš Ježek, Tomáš Kušta, Veronika Němcová, Jana Adámková, Kateřina Benediktová, Jaroslav Červený and Hynek Burdal.  The article's abstract gives a summary of the findings: dogs prefer to align themselves along the north - south axis as long as the magnetic field is stable.  The results change when the magnetic field is unstable.  The full text of the article is also available.

Here are all of the stories I've found about this breakthrough for modern science (so far):

Of course the New York Post has the story.
PBS Newshour covered the story.
Here's the story in the L.A. Times.
The Raw Story picked it up.
And the Huffington Post.
This version of the story is from a website called Motherboard Vice.
DogHeirs covered it.

I'm sure there are more versions of the story out there, but by now you probably get the gist of it.  I find it funny how many reputable news sources picked up the story.  Part of the fun is all the images on these sites.  I've embedded some below for your enjoyment.

Becky Perry's post on Vine

Apparently stepping in dog shit before practice is good luck, at least for Becky Perry who posted this to vine.  She also says "Stepped in dog sh*t on the way to pre game practice.  That's good luck isn't it? #winning #dogshit"

Four Dead in India in Fight over Dog Poop

Here's a youtube video report about the story from India where four people died in a fight that began over dog poop.  It happened in the Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh, India.  I find this video eerie, because the narrator's tone doesn't really match the seriousness of the story.  He seems almost happy to be reading it.  Imagine a fight over dog poop escalating to the point where four people were killed.  Pick up after your dog!

Here's the description from youtube:

A fight over dog excrement has left four dead in the Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh, India.

Further, four people were seriously injured and four policemen suspended as a result of the skirmish.

The battle began when a family's pet defecated in front of a neighbor's door.

It appears that the location had become one of the canine's preferred spots.

The homeowner and the dog's keeper became embroiled in an argument, which quickly escalated into a physical battle involving additional family members, sticks, and knives.

Before long, the two sides engaged in an exchange of gunfire.

All were rushed to a nearby hospital, but reportedly there was no staff available to tend to them.

By the time they were seen, two were declared dead on arrival and two more people died soon after due to excessive blood loss.

The others who sought medical attention were sent to a different hospital and treated for their injuries.

Four policemen have been suspended pending an investigation into why they failed to respond to the altercation and resulting violence when alerted multiple times.

One doctor is also under review for the delay in medical assistance.

Montreal New Year's 2014

Dog poop near the Palais des congrès de Montréal

The same dog turd with the restaurant where we had dinner in the background.
This is wordless wednesday, but I have to mention that these are my first pictures from Canada!  We went to Montreal for a few days, which was a beautiful city, but not immune to the ravages of irresponsible dog owners.
